Project Development

The Clarendon area is a growing and vibrant—and many large- and small-scale commercial developments are happening in and around the Lyon Park community. When developments in our neighborhood boundaries are being proposed, the LPCA often convenes a public meeting and invites developers to engage the community during the meeting and hear feedback directly from our membership.

We intend for this page to be a resource for neighbors to be able to find out about upcoming planned projects, and to learn of any messages about official Lyon Park positions that the LPCA has shared with the Arlington County Board.

Anne Bodine (annebodine@yahoo.com) is our LPCA Development Chair. Please contact her for any development related questions and comments.

The Tyndale School at 712 and 716 N. Barton Street
Use Permit; Board Approved

LPCA members voted in November to recommend that the county board approve a one-year renewal of the Tyndale Christian School use permit at 716 N. Barton St. at the former premises of Bloss Free Will Baptist Church. The original permit was approved by the Board in June for six months, and changed the usage at this property from church to school purposes. The permit was approved with parking ratios below the zoning code requirements (see all terms of the first use permit in the Board report of June 14), and the second permit—if approved by the Board at its December 14 regular meeting—will extend those parking arrangements (4 spots for a population of 40 elementary through 8th grade students).

In an unusual twist, the County Board will also review a separate use permit for the school, tentatively scheduled for the January 25 county board meeting that would keep the same parking ratio, the same school use, and the same transportation arrangements, but would increase enrollment to 80 students. Currently the school accommodates approximately 14 private drop-offs twice a day. The school currently is leasing parking offsite for faculty, but that is not a condition of the December permit nor have we heard that staff is considering such a condition for the January permit. The county cannot limit on-street parking (outside of a regulated permit program); some neighbors have expressed concern about that but the school has been working with the community to ensure off-street parking is not impacted.

Use permits usually take effect with Board approval, meaning a January Board approval would supersede the December use permit approval (which had not occurred but was deemed likely at the time of writing) and the school could begin immediately operating at the higher enrollment if the Board also approves the January permit. LPCA voted in its December 11 meeting on a position that it will convey for the Board’s January vote on this third use permit for Tyndale. Please see the official LPCA letter below.
